Strange times have past and yet may still be upon us: if it’s not the C word on the news it’s the B word (back to that again) so I thought this post needs to be positive and uplifting.
The F word!
We at ILALA are delighted to be taking part in Focus 2020, on Design Avenue, at Chelsea Harbour from 14th to 24th September where we are showcasing our lockdown collaboration with our friends over at Samarkand Design. Their stunning vintage, one-off saree lampshades crown our ever popular GIANT and BABY BULAWAYO gourd lamp bases. We are thrilled to throw a spotlight on these beautiful sculptural pieces and their origins as grains stores, since each of the giant gourds takes the ladies in Zimbabwe a month to weave with locally-harvested ilala palm.
The bases and shades are together christened the BAOBAB Collection, as the wonky shape yet sturdy quality of the form brought to mind the baobab tree, or tree of life. We have three different sizes of base, Giant, Big and Baby, and six shade choices are available for the Giant, four for the Big and Baby, shown below. Our collaboration runs during September and October.

Our space on Design Avenue showcases other pieces from the ILALA collection: Regina side tables, Sungwe throne, Giant Zig Zag table and our popular diamond rush matting, all which blend in perfectly with the Samrakand collection. So swing by and have a chat in a calm, curated space, brimming with texture and colour.
Just to clarify visits to Design Avenue are not by appointment, as the avenue is light and lofty with lots of space for social distancing.
