The English interior. It brings to mind images of grand drawing rooms full of bits and bobs from around the world and heaps of wonderful layers. In essence, this world-known style is a mix of the traditional with eclectic finds. Perhaps a by-product from the Grand Tour or Empire days maybe.
So it struck me as I researched basketwares, whilst in Africa recently, that there is most definitely a place for a spot of rustic simplicity in an English interior. One more layer of rustic loveliness wouldn’t look out of place on a sideboard in a stately home, a small Victorian flat, freezing cottage in Wales or groovy modern pad somewhere cool (like Hammersmith or Somerset, just to mention a few personal favourites). An Englishman’s home is his castle after all, so you might as well make the best of it. With baskets.
So to the Dark Continent.
Being as huge as that continent is, naturally there is a vast range of basket styles. Plain or more decorative, in my opinion each one will easily find a suitable spot in an English home.
